My first job after college was in Boston, Massachusetts, at the MATCH Charter Public High School. As you can learn on the school’s website, the MATCH School is dedicated to preparing students from the greater Boston area for college success and beyond. Most of our students come in well below grade level due to inadequate elementary and middle school education. Each student takes a full high school course load, and is required to attend at least an hour of tutorial every day — this is where I came in. I was a full-time tutor for two freshmen (Deshawn and Miguel), two sophomores (Mariel and Whitnie), and one junior (Denae). I also led a reading class and Friday science tutorials. Words cannot express how much I loved working with my students and my coworkers, who are among the most dedicated and caring people I’ve ever met. It was with a heavy heart that I left Boston, and I sincerely hope to return to the city and the MATCH community when I return from India in 2009.
